Cross-Border Tools for Predicting Water Quality and the Risk of P. parvum Blooms
We are further developing the existing water quality models QSim and HyperWAQ for the Oder River. The models are being rebuilt specifically for the Oder and will be integrated to predict the risk of blooms of the toxic brackish-water alga Prymnesium parvum along both the longitudinal and cross-sectional dimensions of the river. In addition, we are developing an interactive information platform that will display model results through a user-friendly interface. This platform will subsequently be tested in the Middle Oder region in collaboration with water managers and stakeholders from the programme area. It will enable the simulation of different management, climate change, and river restoration scenarios as part of Work Package 5 (Comparing Scenarios for Improving Oder River Management).
The models will be freely accessible and available for use, providing valuable support for the development of early warning systems, emergency response plans, and water management measures. The tools will also provide important insights into how fish populations and fisheries use the Oder River as a habitat.
